In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors in Israel have performed a groundbreaking surgery to reattach the head of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy, Suleiman Hassan, who suffered an internal decapitation in a tragic road accident.
Hassan was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a car, resulting in a severe injury where his skull became detached from the top vertebrae of his spine, a condition medically referred to as bilateral atlanto occipital joint dislocation. He was immediately rushed to Hadassah Medical Center, where an expert team in the trauma unit prepared for an intricate and lengthy surgery.
Led by Dr. Ohad Einav, an orthopedic specialist, the surgical team undertook the complex task of reattaching Hassan's head to the base of his neck. The operation, which lasted several hours, utilized cutting-edge technology, including the use of new plates and fixations in the damaged area.
Dr. Einav credited their success to their knowledge and the innovative technology available in the operating room. He expressed gratitude for the team's ability to save the child, acknowledging the significance of such a challenging and uncommon surgery.
Following the surgery, Hassan was discharged from the hospital with a cervical splint, and doctors will closely monitor his ongoing recovery. Remarkably, despite the severity of his injury, Hassan has exhibited no neurological deficits, sensory impairments, or motor dysfunction.
He is currently functioning normally and walking without assistance, a testament to the surgical team's expertise and the advanced medical care provided. Dr. Einav emphasized the rarity of this type of surgery, particularly on children and teenagers, highlighting the necessity of experience and surgical skill to achieve such successful outcomes.
Hassan's father expressed profound gratitude towards the doctors, acknowledging their professionalism, quick decision-making, and the utilization of advanced technology, which ultimately saved his son's life against challenging odds.
